The Copley Kids Program was founded in August of 1994. The Program is hosted by Copley Parish, The Church of the Resurrection on Rumsey Island in Joppatowne, MD, as one of its social ministries. Although housed in the church's facilities, there is no mandate for religious participation. The church's telephone number is: (410) 679-8700. The telephone number for the Copley Kids Program office is: (410) 679-3352. The parish hall of the Church of the Resurrection is an ideal place to provide a safe, caring and nurturing environment for our youth.

The Copley Kids Program is comprised of two segments: The Odd Jobs Program and The Scholastic Program.

The Odd Jobs Program teaches youth the basics of good work ethics, encourages positive social interaction among youth, and teaches them to interact positively with adults. This is done through the soliciting and performing of various types of odd jobs (mowing grass, raking leaves, painting fences, removing tree stumps, shoveling snow, cleaning garages, etc.) to our clients' complete satisfaction. In 1997 the Copley Kids performed 103 odd jobs, with no injuries, and a 100% satisfaction rate. The kids receive minimum wage, with social security and other applicable taxes paid by the program.

The Scholastic Program was added in 1995. We meet three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) from 3:00 to 6 PM. We provide homework assistance, some tutoring, and social interaction for youth in elementary, middle and high schools. Each student receives a $1.00 stipend for each successful study session attended, paid weekly, in addition to daily snacks. A half - hour of social time is allotted each day at the end of study time. Volunteers and/or staff are also available to spend time on a one to one basis with participants as needed.

Our program offers the use of a network of Pentium computers with laser and Color inkjet printers and a color scanner.

The results of our parent surveys indicate improved grades and improved behavior both at home and in school.

Volunteers are comprised of teachers, instructional assistants, college students, high school students, and members of the clergy and business community, Maryland State Police Officers, and interested community residents.

Our Program Coordinator is experienced with computers and children.

Josh Barmer, our Program Director, is the recipient of several prestigious awards for service to the community and the youth of our area.

We have sponsored youths in conjunction with interested supporters to attend the Bishop Claggett Teen Summer Camp, in Buckeystown, MD. ( 2 consecutive summers)

As a community project our youth presented Valentine's Day gifts, made by themselves, to the staff and patients of Harford Memorial Hospital.

We receive support from both private and public sources as well as concerned individuals and businesses, such as:

The Harford County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council

Bank Of America

The Episcopal Diocese of Maryland

Kaiser Permanente Health Systems

Barnes and Noble Booksellers

The GAP Foundation

SoftwareAG

United Way Campaign

Space Telescope Lab JHU

Allstate Insurance Company employees;

and volunteer assistance from all walks of private and professional life that makes all of this possible with generous donations of their time and talent.

We are also fortunate to have established relations with other organizations such as L.I.N.K. (Let's Interact Now for Kids), Boys and Girls Clubs of Harford County, N.I.C.E., Maryland State Police, and the KIDS C.A.N. campaign and others.

We believe that our youth and caring volunteers are our most valuable program resources. Perhaps you will join us. We'd love to share our experience with you.
